Team and partners
Find out about the organisations and people involved in running the clinical trials in the UK BioNTech Cancer Care Partnership, and what their roles are.
BioNTech
BioNTech is an immunotherapy company founded by scientists and physicians. The company works on the development of novel therapies to address cancer and other serious diseases. BioNTech, together with their partner Pfizer, developed the first approved COVID-19 vaccine based on mRNA. This vaccine was also the first ever mRNA-based product to be approved.
NHS England
More than 300,000 people receive treatment for cancer in the NHS in England every year, and around 70,000 take part in clinical trials. In the UK BioNTech Cancer Care Partnership, the NHS is supplying the hospital infrastructure and staff to recruit and screen potential participants and treat patients who are taking part in the clinical trials. A named NHS consultant (called the Principal Investigator) leads each trial and coordinates with BioNTech and other partners. The NHS Cancer Vaccine Launch Pad (CVLP) is an initiative to widen access to cancer vaccine trials for patients in England. BioNTech is the first pharmaceutical company to recruit clinical trial participants through the CVLP.
Genomics England
Genomics England is a global leader in enabling genomic medicine and research and was set up by the UK government in 2013. Building on the 100,000 Genomes Project, it supports the NHS’s world-first national whole genome sequencing service and runs the growing National Genomic Research Library, alongside delivering numerous major genomics initiatives. Some of the clinical trials in the UK BioNTech Cancer Care Partnership involve personalised cancer vaccine candidates. BioNTech is working with Genomics England to explore how the UK might support personalised cancer vaccine delivery in the future.
Health and Care Research Wales
Health and Care Research Wales is supported by Welsh Government and works closely with the NHS in Wales, local authorities, industry partners, third sector and research organisations across the UK to fund and promote research in Wales. Its mission is to ensure research in Wales is of the highest international scientific quality, is relevant to the needs and challenges of health and social care, and makes a difference to policy and practice that improve the lives of patients, people and communities in Wales. The NHS in Wales will provide the staff and hospital facilities to deliver the clinical trials as part of the UK BioNTech Partnership.
